Hyderabad is the fifth largest city in India with an ancient civilisation and culture. Hyderabad and Secunderbad are twin cities, separated by the Husain Sagar river. Hyderabad occupies a unique position on the map of India. With its confluence of cultures and traditions, the city is often described as a link between the north and the south, and a meeting place of the east and the west. The city is nearly 400 years old and is noted for its natural beauty, mosques and minarets, bazaars and bridges, hills and lakes.

Places to See in Hyderabad

Golconda Fort

The name originates from the telugu word "Golla Konda" "Shephard's Hill", Earlier it was a mud fort and existing structure was expanded by Qutub Shai kings into a massive fort of granite with walls having eight gates and 87 bastions extending upto 7 kms, in circumference.

It is famous for its acoustic system, palaces and ingenious water supply system. It was once famous for Diamond market. The world famous diamond "kohinoor" is said to have come from here. A sound and light show in the evening reenacts the glory and grandeur of Qutub Shahi dynasty.

Qutub Shahi Tombs

Just half a km. away from Golconda Fort lie the Royal Tombs of Qutub Shahi Kings where seven of the sultans lie buried in the midst of the Ibrahim Bagh.

Charminar

This is a symbolic monument with its four imposing minarets each 54 meters high, well decorated with lotus buds and petals. It also houses a mosque. It was built by Mohd. Quli Qutub Shah in 1591 to commemorate the cessation of plague in the city. Hyderabad is also known as "City of Pearls". Also famous for stone studded colored bangles and other bridal finery is the Lad Bazar which provides a feast for the eyes.

Mecca Masjid

A stone's throw away from Charminar one can see Mecca Masjid. Its foundation was laid by Sultan Mohd. Qutub Shah in 1614 and was completed by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1694. The mosque is said to have bricks from Mecca were placed on the top of central arch. hence it is called Mecca masjid. It is the biggest mosque in South India accommodating 10,000 persons for prayer at a time. In the chamber adjoining Mecca masjid are the tombs of the Asaf Jahi rulers.

Salarjung Museum

The Salarjung Museum houses one of the biggest one man collection of priceless antiques in the world, displayed in 35 rooms. Among them Jade room contains priceless objects belonged to former Indian rulers like Aurangzeb, Tipu Sultan, Shahjahan and the Asaf Jahis of Hyderabad.

Public Garden

One of the best laid out gardens in the country, it houses the State Legislature, State Archaeological Museum, Jublee Hall, Jawahar Bal Bhavan and Telugu Lalitha Kala Thoranaman open air theater.

Sri Venkateshwara Temple

Popularly known as 'Birla Mandir', it is built on 280 feet high Kala Pahad over looking the picturesque, Hussain Sagar lake by the Hindustan Charity Trust on a 13 acre plot. The temple was built with 2000 tones of white marble. The magnificent architecture of this temple is synthesis of north and south Indian style. The main temple is of the North Indian style and RajaGopuram (main entrance gate) and Garudalaya are of south Indian style of Architecture. The main deity is 9.5 feet high made of granite brought from Phirangipuram in Guntar District.

Birla Planetarium

Birla planetarium is India's most modern planetarium and first of it's kind in the country. It is equipped with the most advanced technology from Japan and built on Naubath Pahad.

Osmania University

The University named after the Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan was established in 1918 and for several years it was situated in various buildings, finally in 1939 shifted to Arts College. It is fine piece of Architecture with a blend of Indo-Persian and Arabic style.

Paigah Tombs

Paigahas are the noble family of Hyderabad, next only to Nizams. They were the only Jagirdars who were permitted to maintain army. The tombs are situated at Santoshnagar. Each tomb was built with unique lime and mortar in Indo Sarcenic Architecture well decorated with flowers, famous jali work and have marble inlay work on them.

Nehru Zoological Park

Sprawling across 300 lush green acres, the Nehru Zoological park is the biggest Zoo in India with over 250 species with 2450 Nos, of different kinds of animals and birds kept in natural environment. The Lion safari park, the first in Asia, Natural History Museum, pre-historical Animals park, Nocturnal Birds, a children park with a train ride are other impressive sights.

Hussain Sagar Lake

Hussain Sagar Lake which links twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. There are 33 statues of historical personage of Andhra Desha placed along the bund of the lake. Another major attraction of Hussain Sagar Lake is the installation of an 18 meter high 350 ton monolithic statue of Lord Buddha on the rock of Gibraltor in the middle of the Lake. Boat rides and musical fountain in the Lumbini Park located in Buddha Purnima are popular attractions.

Palace Heights (off Abids Road)

Serves traditional Hyderabadi, European and Chinese cuisine. Excellent panoramic views of Hyderabad are visible from the restaurant.

Madina (near Charminar)

Is one of the oldest and best examples of old Hyderabad dining. It was opened in 1947, and was situated on the premises of the Aladdin Wakf. At one time, when Hyderabad was richer than Saudi Arabia (the oil still not having been discovered there), the proceeds used to go to Saudi to help poor Muslims there! Serves traditional Hyderabadi Biryani, Haleem, Nahari and many more.

Hyderabad Cuisine

Irani Hotels

include Cosmopolitan in Narayanguda and Olympia in Abids. The place to go for a good Hyderabad Biryani is Shadab opposite Madina. Shadab has recently modernised the restaurant above the original hotel where you can dine in air-conditioned comfort. Ambience can be found at Irani Cafe. One Irani hotel that has retained its original interior is Grand in Abids, with mirrors on the walls, woodwork and traditional furniture. For a large bustling hotel there is the Garden in Secunderbad which probably sells more tea than any other hotel in the twin cities, or Embassy which occupies a strategic location on the Basheerbagh crossing or Alpha in Secunderbad opened in 1950. Apart from the original Irani restaurant there are the Deccani Hotels which are similar in every way to the Iranis, but for the fact they were started by local Hyderabadis. One such cafe is the Rainbow on Abids, started 20 years ago. Mohammad Yousuf, one of the owners says, "Ours is the only hotel outside the Old City which serves haleem, a traditional Hyderabadi dish made of ground wheat and mutton, throughout the year, and not just during Ramzan when it is traditionally eaten. Haleem takes at least three hours to prepare. We start making it around 11am and its almost 2pm before its ready."

Shopping
Main shopping areas are Abids, Basheerbagh, Nampally and Sultan Bazar in Hyderabad and MG Road and Rashtrapati Road in Secunderbad. The markets around Charminar are favoured for bangles and pearls. Hyderabad is synonymous with pearls. Cultured pearls studded in gold and silver jewellery of exquisite design are a specialty. Pearls come in many shapes and of particular interest is the ‘rice-pearl’ – a tiny variety. The precious "Basra", a pearl unmatched in lustre, colour and price and is available in select stores. Pearls are sold in strings or raw by weight.

Laad Bazaar

This famous, colourful shopping centre of the old city, is tucked away in one of the streets leading off from the Charminar. Bridal wear, Pearls, Attar (perfume) and the traditional Hyderabadi glass and stone studded bangles are sold here. The areas surrounding Charminar like 'Charkaman' and 'Mitti-ka-sher' are famous for antique kundan and enamel jewellery, temple sarees, old bidri and silver, crystal and pearls. "Darushafa" is famous for the tissue-thin silver leaf that decorates Indian sweetmeats, and bidri ware. The appliquéd patchwork skirts, bags and belts, set with sparkling mirror and tiny beads of the Banjara gypsies; Nirmal lacquer ware, ornate brass from Pembarthi, Kondapalli carved toys, leather puppets and Warangal carpets combine to make Hyderabad, truly a shopper's paradise.

Transportation

By Air

Indian airlines, East West airlines, Jet airways, Modiluft, Sahara Air, Vayudoot etc are operating flights in and out of Hyderabad.

By Rail

The Indian railway, the world's largest railway under a single management, today is divided into nine zones. Secunderabad, the twin-city of Hyderabad, is the headquarters of the South Central Zone. All major trains stops or departs from here. Hyderabad is the major point of arrival or departure.

By Road

The Andra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) connects hyderabad to every city, town and all except very small villages in the state. Express and luxury coaches are available for inter-city and interstate services. The APSRTC city control is at Ranigunj Depot at Secunderabad.
